Save Our Mangroves Now

I work as an otter conservationist to reverse the decline of mangrove habitats in Vietnam and across the globe to restore biodiversity, protect livelihoods, and mitigate against the impacts of the climate  crisis. Why mangroves matter - Superheroes of biodiversity Survival artists, nature’s kindergarten, climate savers – mangroves are versatile superheroes. They are habitat and nursery for over 3000 fish species, can store 3 to 5 times more carbon per area than tropical upland forests, and provide livelihoods for over 120 million people. But this unique ecosystem is under threat: more than a third of all mangrove forests have disappeared since the mid-20th century due to agriculture, logging, and urbanization. Mối liên hệ giữa biến đổi khí hậu và cháy rừng


Hiện nay, toàn cầu đang phải đối mặt với hàng loạt các vấn đề môi trường nóng như: biến đổi khí hậu, suy giảm đa dạng sinh học, ô nhiễm các chất hữu cơ độc hại, suy thoái đất, cháy rừng,...Những vấn đề này có mối liên hệ mật thiết với nhau và đang ảnh hưởng trực tiếp đến cuộc sống con người. Theo kết quả phân tích của các chuyên gia thì biến đổi khí hậu là một trong những tác nhân làm tăng nguy cơ cháy rừng và làm các vụ cháy rừng ngày càng trở nên nghiêm trọng hơn.

Nhiệt độ tăng cao, vật liệu khô dễ cháy, hạn hán kéo dài, gió giựt mạnh, độ ẩm thấp,...đều là những nguyên nhân dẫn tới các vụ cháy rừng mà phần lớn đều do sự nóng dần lên toàn cầu. Đây là các yếu tố thời tiết được các chuyên gia nghiên cứu sử dụng để tính toán mức độ nguy hiểm của các đám cháy.

Biến đổi khí hậu lâu dài là một thực trạng dễ dàng nhận ra ở nước Úc. Điều này được thể hiện trong các báo cáo về tình hình nhiệt độ đang tăng cao trên bề mặt trái đất, lượng mưa giảm từ 10-20% trên toàn miền Nam nước Úc. Sự thay đổi thời tiết cực đoan này có liên quan chặt chẽ đến sự gia tăng của khí thải nhà kính và những sự thay đổi trong tự nhiên.

Biến đổi khí hậu lâu dài dẫn đến sự gia tăng các vụ cháy rừng nghiêm trọng hơn trên khắp nước Úc, đặc biệt là những khu vực phía Nam. Mức độ biến đổi khí hậu nơi đây đang làm ảnh hưởng trầm trọng đến các mùa, nhất là mùa xuân. Điều này đồng nghĩa với các mùa cháy rừng cũng bắt đầu sớm hơn bình thường. 

Biến đổi khí hậu chính là một trong những tác nhân thời tiết cực đoan dẫn đến các vụ cháy rừng kinh hoàng. Sau khi tìm hiểu được mối liên hệ phức tạp giữa khí hậu, cháy rừng và thảm thực vật, chúng ta cần phải sớm hoạch định các chính sách và những biến pháp cần thiết để ứng phó với biến đổi khí trong tương lai. Vietnam’s Coral Reefs Are Dying

Coral reefs around the world have been seriously degraded over the past 20 years and Vietnam’s are no exception. These ecosystems, which are vital to sustaining oceanic biodiversity, are very sensitive to changing ocean temperatures and destructive human activities. Experts warn that within 20 years, Vietnam may not have any left. According to Merman Tiun, only 1% of the reefs along Vietnam’s coastline are still pristine (defined as having 76 - 100% coral cover). 31% are in “poor condition” (defined as having 0 – 10% coral cover).“Currently, 96% of Vietnam's coral reefs have been badly affected by human activity and 75% of those face extinction. In recent years, fishermen in Danang have used upgraded nets, causing tremendous damage to coastal reefs. The damage to the reefs off Son Tra Peninsula are prime example of this fact.
