Save Our Mangroves Now

I work as an otter conservationist to reverse the decline of mangrove habitats in Vietnam and across the globe to restore biodiversity, protect livelihoods, and mitigate against the impacts of the climate  crisis. Why mangroves matter - Superheroes of biodiversity Survival artists, nature’s kindergarten, climate savers – mangroves are versatile superheroes. They are habitat and nursery for over 3000 fish species, can store 3 to 5 times more carbon per area than tropical upland forests, and provide livelihoods for over 120 million people. But this unique ecosystem is under threat: more than a third of all mangrove forests have disappeared since the mid-20th century due to agriculture, logging, and urbanization. 250.000 ca nhiễm trong vòng 1 ngày Mỹ lập kỷ lục mới


Chỉ trong 24h ngắn ngủi ghi nhận 250.000 ca nhiểm kỷ lục tại Mỹ vào ngày 18/12 số ca nhập viện cao ngất ngưỡng làm bác sĩ và y tá trở tay không kịp. Theo số liệu từ Đại học Johns Hopkins, 249.709 ca bệnh Covid-19 mới được ghi nhận tại Mỹ trong ngày 18/12. Một ngày trước đó, con số này là hơn 247.000. Số ca tử vong trong ngày 18/12 là 2.814 người, giảm so với hơn 3.300 người vào ngày 17/12. Tuy nhiên, đây vẫn là một trong những ngày chết chóc nhất trong đại dịch tại Mỹ. Hiện nước này ghi nhận tổng cộng 313.406 trường hợp tử vong vì Covid-19. Theo Dự án Theo dõi Covid, 114.751 người hiện phải nhập viện. Đây là một kỷ lục khác. Trong đó, gần 22.000 người đang được điều trị trong phòng chăm sóc đặc biệt. Trong khi quốc hội Mỹ chưa thông qua gói cứu trợ mới, các tiểu bang đang phải vật lộn để đối phó với đại dịch, theo Guardian. Chính quyền bang California ghi nhận hơn 41.000 ca bệnh mới hôm 18/12 và 300 trường hợp tử vong. Tuần trước, bang này ghi nhận hơn 250.000 ca bệnh mới và 1.500 ca tử vong. Các bệnh viện đang vật lộn với nguy cơ cạn kiệt nguồn lực và nhân lực. Tính đến ngày 18/12, gần 17.000 người ở California phải nhập viện vì mắc Covid-19, cao hơn gấp đôi so với con số được ghi nhận vào đỉnh dịch hồi tháng 7. Hơn 3.500 bệnh nhân tại bang này cũng đang được chăm sóc đặc biệt. Dù vaccine Covid-19 bắt đầu được tiêm chủng cho các y bác sĩ, giới quan sát dự đoán số người nhập viện có thể đạt kỷ lục mới vào giữa tháng 1/2021.

Vietnam’s Coral Reefs Are Dying

Coral reefs around the world have been seriously degraded over the past 20 years and Vietnam’s are no exception. These ecosystems, which are vital to sustaining oceanic biodiversity, are very sensitive to changing ocean temperatures and destructive human activities. Experts warn that within 20 years, Vietnam may not have any left. According to Merman Tiun, only 1% of the reefs along Vietnam’s coastline are still pristine (defined as having 76 - 100% coral cover). 31% are in “poor condition” (defined as having 0 – 10% coral cover).“Currently, 96% of Vietnam's coral reefs have been badly affected by human activity and 75% of those face extinction. In recent years, fishermen in Danang have used upgraded nets, causing tremendous damage to coastal reefs. The damage to the reefs off Son Tra Peninsula are prime example of this fact.
